How To Hire And Retain Good Employees
To hire and train a new employee is costly. Estimates range from 33-50% of a worker’s annual salary to hire and train a new worker. This figure does not include the expense of having to replace a new hire because they don’t fit the job as originally expected, or the loss of productivity if a retained new hire doesn’t perform as needed. Hiring good employees, quickly, is financially profitable.
Here are some tips to:
Find and retain the right fit for the job
Reduce selection costs
Utilize the strengths of employees
Increase team efficiency and productivity
Lessen work stress and reduce sick days
Develop a written job description. Include the manager of the new hire position in this decision. Utilize psychological testing to indicate the needed intensity of the new hire’s way of working.
Know the applicant. It is imperative to confirm the details on a resume by contacting former employers, references and schools, as well as conducting a brief interview.
Determine, through psychological testing, how their style of working will be played out in the workplace. This is crucial. For example, a person whose style requires a well-thought out, orderly sequence of tasks, will be under extreme stress if placed into a position that requires snap decisions, working in chaos with conflicting instructions, improvising, and taking chances. This stress of working against themselves contributes to sick days.
Define, through testing, their style of interacting with others. A person who works best alone will be highly stressed interacting in a constant team format.
Train staff and workers to produce a workplace of respect and appreciation for each individual. Management by confrontation and criticism quickly produces anger, resentment, low self-esteem, high stress, and employee turnover in a good employee that is the right fit for the job.
